Questions therapists ask about marketing a private practice

Straight answers on Google reviews and ethics codes, Psychology Today, insurance panels, Google Ads, websites, the benchmark data and the free 14-day trial.

Can I ask clients for Google reviews?

Not current clients. The APA Ethics Code restricts soliciting testimonials from current therapy clients and others vulnerable to undue influence, and the ACA code and most state boards read the same way. Some clinicians ask former clients after termination where their board allows it, and some never ask at all. That is a decision to make with your board's language in front of you, not a marketing decision. What is always allowed: making your profile so complete that reviews matter less, and replying to any review you do get without ever confirming that the person was in your care. See the reviews guide.

Then how do therapists compete on Google without reviews?

By being the most complete listing in the search. Across 171,610 listings the median has 6 reviews and 20.4% have none, so the bar is low. Categories, specialties, insurance accepted, hours, a linked website, photos and answered questions all feed local ranking. 22.7% of listings show no hours at all. Beating that field is mostly a matter of finishing the profile.

Is Psychology Today still worth about $30 a month?

For most solo practices, yes, but as a floor and not a plan. A directory listing puts you in a comparison set where fee, insurance and specialty are the visible variables and everyone looks similar. It reliably produces some calls, and it stops producing more no matter what you spend. Treat it as one of four or five channels. The directories and website guide covers what to move off the directory and onto your own site.

Should I join insurance panels or go private pay?

Panels solve demand and cost you rate. Reimbursement for a standard 60-minute session commonly runs $70 to $130 depending on payer, license and region, and credentialing takes 60 to 120 days. Private pay in most metros runs $130 to $250. The marketing implication is direct: on a panel you need the referral channels that payers control, and off a panel you need your own demand, which means Google, your site and a real intake process. Full breakdown in the fees guide.

What does a new client cost on Google Ads?

In most metros, $12 to $45 per click on therapy terms and $80 to $250 per booked consultation. It works when the campaign is narrow: your city, your specialties, exact and phrase match, no broad "therapy" or "mental health" keywords, and a landing page that names your fee and your availability. It fails when it is left on defaults. See the Google Ads guide.

Do Facebook and Instagram ads work for therapy?

Yes, for specialty offers and for waitlist building, not for "I need a therapist right now" demand. Meta restricts targeting around health, so the targeting is geographic and broad and the creative does the sorting. Expect $8 to $35 per lead on a specialty offer such as postpartum, couples, or teen anxiety. Details in the Meta ads guide.

Does my website really matter if I am on directories?

17% of listings in the dataset have no website linked at all. Listings with a site show a median of 9 reviews against 1 for listings without one. Beyond ranking, your site is the only place you control the four things a prospective client is actually deciding on: whether you treat their problem, what it costs, whether you take their insurance, and how soon they can be seen.

How do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT for a therapist?

The answer engines pull from your site's plain text, your Google profile, and directory and association pages that name you. Write your specialties, cities, fees and insurance as ordinary sentences rather than icons and sliders, keep your name and address identical everywhere, and get listed on your association's directory. The AI search guide has the checklist.

What is a missed call actually costing me?

Multiply your fee by the average number of sessions a client stays. A caller who would have attended 15 sessions at $150 is worth $2,250, and most people looking for a therapist call two or three practices in one sitting and book with whoever answers. Put your own numbers into the calculator.

How reliable is the benchmark data?

It is public data collected at scale, so it is good to within a point or two, not to the decimal. Listings are deduplicated by Google place and refreshed monthly. Because the category is self-selected, the set includes adjacent practitioners such as massage and physical therapists alongside mental health clinicians. Method is on the about page.

Where does the benchmark data come from?

Public Google Business Profile listings found through Google Maps searches for therapy and counseling practices in every state. Only public business fields are kept. No reviewer names, no client information, nothing behind a login.

What is included in the free 14-day trial?

Any one of the services, or several: Google Ads management, Meta ads, AI search optimization, local SEO and Google profile work, website design, social media, review and reputation work, missed-call text-back and follow-up, email and SMS, bookkeeping, and appointment setting. Setup, management and reporting are included. Ad spend paid to Google or Meta, if you choose to run ads, stays yours.

What happens after the 14 days?

You decide. Keep the service at the price quoted before the trial started, switch to a different one, or stop. Nothing renews on its own and nothing is charged during the trial.

Do I have to give a credit card?

No. There is no card on file during the trial. What is needed is access to the accounts involved and one 20-minute setup call. Nothing that touches protected health information is part of the trial, and any tool that would sits behind a signed agreement first.
